Your winter survival kit

8th January 2017

Winter is a bit rubbish really isn’t it? And that’s coming from a winter baby! I don’t particularly enjoy the cold weather although I enjoy the fashion; I’m all about wrapping up cosy and wearing big jumpers with jeans and ankle boots. I also love toasty nights in with hot drinks and candles… Anyway. This weeks post is all about helping to make your battle through the Winter months that bit easier so read on to discover what you need in your winter survival kit!

I don’t know about you, but my skin is never the best in winter. The brutal weather really attacks and as such I’m left with dry skin and lips. This is actually my second tub of Origins GinZing moisturiser and it’s been my favourite for quite a while now. You only need a small bit for the whole of your face, leaving your skin incredibly hydrated and radiant. It melts into your skin instantly so you aren’t left greasy and it’s very light so you can barely feel it at all. The scent is orange and oh so fresh, a real welcome on a groggy morning. I actually find only applying this before I go to bed suits my skin and I haven’t seen a dry patch in months!

Now comes a bit of a cult product, the one and only Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I’ve had this a couple of years ago and at first while I wasn’t the biggest fan of the smell, I soon began to appreciate it a lot. While it’s original purpose was to restore and relieve cracked skin, it is now so much more. It will rescue your dry cuticles, soften cracked heels and soothe sunburn amongst much much more. I personally find it a lifesaver for my sore and chapped lips where a drop will do just the job to leave my lips smooth and protected. Admittedly it is fairly heavy and a bit sticky but definitely worth it.
If you’ve been around Musings & More for a while now, you’ll understand all about my love of candles. And there was no way I couldn’t include just one in a winter survival kit! My choice of the month is for once not a Yankee Candle but my very first WoodWick candle! If you’ve not heard of WoodWick, the candles essentially offer a crackling sound as it burns, as if you had your very own log fire! I’ve always wanted a fireplace but unfortunately am yet to own one so this candle is the next best thing. It gives our home a really snug, cosy feeling when outside it’s miserable and cold! Naturally, the scents are gorgeous too and this particular one is a trilogy of summer fruits where each layer is a different flavour: apple, currant and cherry.

It’s likely you’ll find me curled up with my Kindle which I’ve had for about a year now. At first I was dubious as I do love the feel of a real book but a kindle is just so much more convenient. It’s wonderfully light and slips into any bags I own, not to mention I can keep hundreds of books on such a small device which kind of blows my mind. The lack of weight also allows me to read in any position that suits me and I don’t have to worry about a heavy arm. I’m currently reading Before I Let You In by Jenny Blackhurst which is my favourite genre of book – psychological thriller and I’m finding myself fitting in reading whenever I can just so I can read on!
Now you can’t not have a hot drink with your book can you? Winter opens up a window of warming beverages on offer and I love the feeling of feeling warm both inside and out. Why not purchase yourself a luxury hot chocolate drink? There are such a huge range of choices and it’s so much cheaper than buying one from Starbucks all the time! In our house, the drink of choice is a Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate from Whittards! Served with lots of squirty cream and marshmallows, please! Failing that, you can’t go wrong with a good old cup of tea and maybe a biscuit or two!

Slipping into a warm bath at the end of a wintery day has to be up there with one of the best feelings. Save from the bitter weather, being engulphed by the hot water is incredibly relaxing and made only better by the presence of a bath bomb. Or failing that, a luxurious bubble bath or sensual shower gel, just anything to make the experience even better after you’ve battled whatever weather has been occurring that day. My choice recently was the Shoot For The Stars bath bomb from Lush which I picked up in their Boxing Day sales. The design itself is beautiful but let’s be honest, it’s the inside we care about right? This particular bath bomb is full of orange and bergamot oil, so all in all very sweet as well as partnered with a touch of cocoa butter and almond oil so it’s a great addition to your winter bath time to nourish your skin.

Last but not least, there are plenty of clothing extras which we find ourselves pulling out our wardrobes once winter hits: scarfs, gloves, hats…but what about when we scurry in from the great outdoors? We usually swaddle up in a snug dressing gown but let us not forget the humble slipper! I remember when I was younger and the options were a lot sparse but now we are simply spoiled for choice! After a day at work, I love tearing off my socks and sinking my grateful feet into fur lined slippers. This year, I’m all about these glorious boots from FatFace, courtesy of my in-laws which are an instant hug for my feet.

If you think I’ve missed anything, I’d love to know what else you think should go in a Winter Survival Kit and what you’re actually quite looking forward to!
