How NOT to break your New Year's resolutions

Well hello again and Happy New Year! You might have noticed I took a bit of a break over the Christmas period. Blogging is naturally a very present thing in my mind and life and I wanted some time to switch off from everything. I'll be honest that it was wonderful and was a real chance for me to reassess and regroup.

Are you planning on making any New Year's resolutions? Many of you may be and if you aren't officially, there may still be things you would like to achieve but just without the label. Either way, I've decided to take a few of the most popular resolutions and give my take on ways to help you on your way!

10 life lessons Harry Potter has taught us

If you don't know of my love of Harry Potter, where have you been? Today's post is dedicated to the life lessons that the Harry Potter series has brought us. I grew up with these books and although at the age I was, I didn't quite realise the knowledge they contained at the time, having reread them multiple times since I can fully appreciate them on a whole other level, which I shall lay out before you in the post below. Enjoy!

The importance of date nights

In our house, Date Nights are really important to us. Matt works odd hours that can conflict with my own so we're not together all the time which is why I like to make sure we make time for ourselves as a couple. I'm a firm believer that simply by squaring off some time where you can and giving it a name (aka Date Night) is really important as it makes it a bit more different, a bit more special than your usual routine of curling up in front of the TV, as lovely as that can be.

That said, it can be quite difficult thinking of things to do. Going out for dinner or to the cinema is all very nice but sometimes you just want a bit more. And that's where Date Night comes in. Date Night is a subscription box service with a difference. Forget six miniature beauty items that you don't like, need or want and instead each month you get a themed box to help you create a unique and fun date night.

Gluten Free Christmas Baking

A lot of your really seemed to enjoy my previous Gluten Free baking post (here) so when I found out that Delicious Alchemy were bringing out a Christmas range, I knew that pulling together some yummy creations would make the perfect first post for December! To reiterate, I am not gluten intolerant but I know a lot of people who are and I firmly believe a few clever and simple changes can allow everyone to join in the fun.

An Icelandic Adventure

I know it must seem like I've been away a lot recently but I promise you, that's not the norm! We've had some special occasions to celebrate such as my birthday trip to New York, Matt's birthday to Barcelona and most recently, our Anniversary trip to Iceland.

I've wanted to go to Iceland for a very long time and Matt had originally planned to take me in January for my Birthday but the Blue Lagoon was closed at that time so we went to New York instead (no complaints here!). So when it came to deciding what to do for our fifth anniversary, we decided to finally give Iceland a whirl. Five years felt special and like it should be celebrated. And so on the 11th of November, we boarded the plane to Iceland.

Beauty on Trial #3

I can't believe this is my first Beauty on Trial for a while now! I don't feel like I've even written about beauty very much either so I'm excited to have been able to get my teeth into some new products and give you my thoughts. To confirm, all photos are taken before the testing process. Hence why they look so shiny and new! I then use them for one month minimum to give a fair opinion. So let's get started shall we?

Autumn with Yankee Candle

When someone says the word 'Autumn', what do you think of? For me, it's crisp air and cold mornings. Crunchy leaves beneath boots in tones of oranges, greens and browns. Nights that draw in quickly and are spent mostly on comfortable seating, fingers curled around mugs of warm drinks and let's be honest, the best TV is on in the Autumn. I don't know about you, but I'm currently loving Ordinary Lies, The Missing and Black Mirror. One thing that is never missing from my house throughout Autumn and Winter though is a good candle. For me, they add a real ambience and just complete a setting. Add a candle or two to any room and things are instantly a whole lot cosier.

So when Yankee Candle got in touch to show me their Harvest Time* collection, it's safe to say I was thrilled. They have such a wide range of delicious options and the lasting time is well worth the money. I'm known for having a Yankee Candle drawer at home (sorry Matt...), stuffed full of my favourites. Still, what harm is a few more...?

A Magical Woodland Hideaway at North Star Club

I love writing blog posts but you know when you get really excited to write a post? Yeah, that. That is just how I felt about pulling together the very contents of what you are reading now. I knew our stay at the North Star Club was going to be unique (my very favourite kind of UK getaway), but I had no idea just how much I was going to fall in love.

WHEN IN ROME - PART TWO

If you haven't seen the first part of our trip to Rome, you can take a look here!

The streets of Rome are certainly something to behold. While it's wonderful being able to visit the tourist attractions you hear about all the time, it's even better to discover the parts you don't get told about. It was important to Matt and I that we left time to just wander around and follow the streets wherever they might take us. Because that's the beauty of Rome, I don't think we came to a dead end once! We walked and walked, our chins often tilted up as we gazed at the beautiful buildings that were so common in Rome. There were restaurants aplenty, crammed down narrow cobbled streets while you were serenaded with music. It's no wonder Rome is known as such a romantic city, it positively hung in the air. Couples with entwined fingers drank wine while it was common to see a proposal or two each day.

WHEN IN ROME - PART ONE

I appreciate it must not seem that long since I was telling you all about our trip to Barcelona but I am back with another travel post, but this time all about Rome! Again, it's been split into two parts due to me not wanting a post you'll have to scroll for days through.

Matt has wanted to go to Italy for quite a while, even going so far as attempting to teach himself some of the language. I’ve always heard great things and knew it was always going to be somewhere I would like to visit. So when we found we had the time and funds to go to Italy, the one struggle we had was exactly whereabouts. We darted between Florence, Venice, and Rome, each holding beautiful and distinguishing features that tempted us. We settled on Rome, simply because we knew exactly what it had to offer and everything slotted into place smoothly, the flights were perfect and the hotel looked divine.

#QBLOGGER WINTER WISHLIST CHALLENGE

If you don't know already, back in May I was made a QBlogger which is essentially a blogger for my local shopping centre Queensgate (you can read more about it here) and as part of this, we are all often set fun challenges to compete within Queensgate where we get to showcase the results to you, our readers.

We had all been eagerly awaiting the next one after having such a good time at the last and finally we received an email requesting us to meet at Pret A Manger for further instruction. So there we all met with a free drink courtesy of Pret to await our challenge! The task was simple: create a winter wishlist of ten different presents we would want to find under the Christmas tree. These had to come from at least six different retailers and suit a range of budgets. We also needed to find our 'ultimate present', right at the top of our Christmas list.

THE EMPORIUM AT BOOTS

When myself and Kat from Laydey Katabella were invited by Boots (for my non-UK based readers, Boots is a huge health and beauty retailer) to discover 'The Emporium' on a Thursday night it's safe to say we were mystified about what we were actually attending. We were two of a select number of bloggers amongst Boots super-fans invited to the event which made it even more exciting. Immediately upon stepping into the store we were welcomed with glasses of bubbly and raspberry lemonade before heading up the escalator and onto the red carpet!

Ten things I'd tell my younger self

Yep, that's me. Not twelve, but you get the idea.
Growing up is hard. Like, really hard. I remember occasionally wishing that I could be young and care free again but when I think about it, there was definitely a lot about childhood I wouldn't want to relieve again. Like that unsure, almost awkward stage. I found myself caught in a daze recently, wondering, if I had the power to, what I would reassure myself when I was child. How nice it would be to calm my panicky self with a few words about how everything is going to work out.

And naturally, I decided to share that with you lovely lot! So here are ten things I wish I could tell my younger self at twelve years old...

GLUTEN FREE BAKING: CHOCOLATE BROWNIE FUDGE AND VICTORIA SPONGE CAKE

I think we've all been guilty of using a package baking mixture. While I do always try and do every step myself, there is no denying that there is something really satisfying about being able to buy packets which will produce gooey chocolate chip cookies or fluffy cupcakes both quickly and easily. I really don't think there is anything wrong with using these and the results are often just as delicious.

When Delicious Alchemy, a company who provide a wide range of gluten free products including baking mixes got in touch, I was raring to go. To make it clear, I am not gluten intolerant in any way, shape or form. I do however emphasise how rubbish it can be to find out your gluten intolerant or perhaps coeliac. Gluten is probably in most of the food I eat so I know I'd find it a struggle if it was me and I know people who are taking steps to remove gluten from their diets and who find it difficult. I think that is why I was so keen to do this post, I wanted to show that gluten free products can be cheap, easy and most of all tasty and Delicious Alchemy ticked all three boxes.

A LONG WEEKEND IN BARCELONA PART 2

So here we are for part two of my trip to Barcelona! If you missed the first part where I spoke about where we stayed and Sagrada Familia, you can check it out here. As I explained, there felt too much to put into one post so I've split into two for you. I'm going to continue this post with what else we got to on our little getaway.

A LONG WEEKEND IN BARCELONA PART 1

I am very fortunate to have a wonderful boyfriend who is very good at surprises. As I've written about on Musings & More, for my 18th birthday he took me to Paris and for my 23rd this year, he surprised me with a trip to New York! Both of which were mind blowing trips that he had carefully crafted, knowing how much I had longed to go. But while it is so lovely to be surprised, sometimes you want to be the one making your other half beam in such a way that only something unexpectedly wonderful can do. So in February, about a month after we had returned for New York, I started plotting. Because now it would be Matt's turn to be wowed, or so I hoped!

WHY WE SHOULD ALL BE BAD BLOGGERS

Blogging is hard work. Whether you are a full time blogger, living and breathing your craft, or you do it as much as you can, juggling your little space on the internet alongside work, children and just life. I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that as a blogger, I don't think you ever really switch off. With a 'normal' job, a lot of the time (career depending), you can leave your work at the door and focus on meaningless things, perhaps what you'll have for dinner or what Netflix show you'll start. But with blogging your mind is always ticking, always sifting through ideas or lists of what you have to do for your latest posts. You can be the most organised of bloggers with scheduled posts up until March but I'd hazard a guess that you are still always thinking.

FOUR WAYS TO ENJOY SUMMER AT HOME

Like any other gal, I do love a Summer holiday. While I am very fortunate to have traveled to some great places this year, I'm aware that it's not exactly cost effective or possible for everyone, so when
Ocean Loans* challenged me to celebrate and capture Summer around the home and garden, I thought it was a great opportunity to begin thinking more carefully about how we can all benefit from the joys of Summer without even leaving the house. I also decided to put this to the test myself with friends at the weekend.

MUSINGS & MORE TURNS ONE!

I can't quite believe I'm writing this post! When I first started Musings & More, I didn't really expect it to really last. People won't like it, they won't read it! I'll run out of things to write about... I'm not good enough! Yet, one year later and here we are! Even just thinking about the post gave me the time to reflect about my little space on the internet and just how far we have come. Never did I expect anyone would read my musings, my opinions or enjoy my photos. Never did I expect to be able to work with some incredible brands or be invited to events and meet fellow bloggers like myself both online and off, who I now count as friends. I certainly didn't expect to land my dream job, thanks to my blog.

TRAVEL: ORLANDO DIARY

When we woke up at our airport hotel on the 14th of June and switched on the news, we were horrified by what we saw. In the largest mass shooting in America, 49 people had been shot dead in a cruel and senseless killing at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Naturally we were shocked, but more so we were saddened by this horrible event. I’ll admit that I had a heavy heart as we made our way to Manchester airport to catch our flight.

NEW URBAN DECAY FAVOURITES

We all know what Urban Decay are most famous for. Go on, I know you're thinking it. Their Naked palettes. Whether it's the classic Naked palette or maybe Naked Smokey, it is the palettes that are often associated with the American brand. I own other products from UD, for example if I want my make up to remain on my face, it's the All Nighter Setting Spray I'm going to reach for. And I refuse to prime my eyelids with anything other than their Primer Potion. But there are lots I knew I was missing out on and when a lovely little package arrived at Musings & More HQ, I was so excited to finally delve more into the well known brand.

TRAVEL: A Beach Hut by the Sea

While we love to get away abroad and discover new cultures, there are so many beautiful places on our door step, that every year we always try and make an effort to visit somewhere in the United Kingdom. This year of course, we had Luna to think about so I set about trying to find the perfect break that would accompany our little pup too!

I desperately wanted to find somewhere close to the sea and when I came across Darwin Escapes  who offer a selection of beach huts situated on the the coast of North Devon, I couldn't believe my luck. It ticked so many of our boxes, it was unique, an experience we'd never done before, right on the beach and dog friendly! I don't think I've been so excited about something for such a long time and couldn't wait once we'd booked, counting down the three months constantly!

BAKING: EASTER CARAMEL SHORTBREAD

  • Caramel Shortbread is a gorgeous, very sweet treat that many of us love. You've got three layers of
absolute decadence, the smooth, hard chocolate topping which your teeth sinks through until it reaches the luscious, gooey caramel before meeting a crisp, golden shortbread. You definitely don't need much of this to be satisfied! Getting close to easter now, I wanted a bit of an ode to the spring holiday so topped mine with mini eggs and adorable Malteaser bunnies! A relaxing stay at Wyboston Lakes

I'm a massive fan of those websites like Groupon and Wowcher which if you don't know, are websites that allow you to get all manner of things for a discounted price for a limited time only. I'm talking meals out, experiences, broadway shows, gadgets, goods and my favourite of all? Short holiday breaks! Often one or two nights and a lot of time including breakfast and dinner or even a spa, they are a great way to go away somewhere for some relaxation. Before we had our house, I'll admit me & Matt went on a lot of these breaks, simply because we could. They were great value for money and offered us the chance to get away from our families (as much as we love em!) and spend some time together.

Valentines ideas for when you're in a relationship AND single!

Valentines day is a really odd one. The one day of the year where we are told we must declare our love through cards and merchandise. I've never really massively minded the day myself whether I was single or in a relationship. Myself and Matt are fairly neutral about it as a whole, it usually depends on whether we can be bothered to organise anything specific and if time permits but we usually always at least get each other a card. We'd much rather spend the time and money on celebrating our Anniversary though as this feels a whole lot more special to us. Whatever your take on February the 14th, I've come with some tips for absolutely anyone - whether you are loved up or happily single.
